LOST IN SAMENESS
The research was concentrate on the building of the new AKH, which is seen through the human eyes perception as "a labyrint of corridors". The main issue was to understand the "megastructure" and the transfer process in its depths.
To find a way to read the complex building, I used book "Learning from Las Vegas" by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown published 1972. Las Vegas is not the subject of the book. The symbolism of architectural form is. The special approach to architecture of communication over space, achieved through style and signs. The key elements of my research were the navigation system of the people in these spaces. But what is wrong with the space?
The whole hospital is designed as highly sophisticated system of complex infrastructure, including transport of various liquids, sanitary goods in containers... the principle was how to quickly and easy move the case from point A to point B. In the contradiction, we can`t talk about its impact on the orientation of patients, students and others.
The space are created by prefabricated panels, seats, ceiling, doors, etc. After thousands of same door behind which is another hall, or a large staircase, or perhaps a library or anything? The sameness absorbs small differences and reject our attention to orientated ourself in the spaces. We are entirely depend on the signs and symbols. People are like a "blind sheep" walking and waiting for a sign and turn.
Moreover, it is clear that the organization of the circulation is confusion and not all the sites are well marked. As a result some places are easily overlooked or not used because of missing guidelines.
The mapping used in the 5 floor, which is the entrance level is considered as a representative of situation in the hospital. The method is used to refer about places that are bewilderingly sign. Few example of the specific location. The North street is not that used. The large staircase is badly sign, and one could not be sure where to get by it. The special location are known by the users – library, study spaces. The pharmacy need to have yellow food print in the floor that patients are not afraid to go in, etc.
